The Wire, Season 4 Essay - 1341 Words

In The Wire, Season 4 starts with four main characters who have never appeared in the series before. But these four children end up being the most touching characters in the series. This season gives audience a quick exploration of another social theme by expanding its scope to examine the foster care. Randy Wagstaff, one of these four main characters, is an eighth-grade student at Edward Tilghman Middle School. He is well known amongst his peers for his imagination and ideas. With a business mind and a charismatic personality, Randy runs a small business selling snacks and soft drinks at school and to neighborhood drug dealers. One thing that separates Randy from the others is that he is dependent on social services; he lives with his foster mother, Miss Anna, who instills discipline in his life. Under the care of his foster mother, Randy fears she would abandon him if he got in any serious trouble because the last thing Randy wants is to go back to a group home where he was emotionally scarred as a child, which is why he tried to talk his way out of possible expulsion by saying he knew about a murder. What happened to Randy Wagstaff in the end could be the saddest story in the entire series. After he exchanges conversations with the cops, he is ostracized at school and gets beaten up by fellow students because the Stansfield organization found out he was snitching. However, Sergeant Carver promises him that the Baltimore PD would protect him and his family.
