Many composers explore the comforting security that an single feels when he/she is able to belong. However, there are many texts that explore the types of barriers that whitethorn prevent an item-by-item from belonging or which may reverse his/her choice not to belong. This notion of belonging is explored in snapshot Skryznecki’s poems Ancestors and expectcard, Niki Caro’s 2002 film Whale Rider and Lauren Weisberger’s novel The Devil Wears Prada through the use of various poetic, cinematic and literary techniques. Cultural friendship can give an individual a sense of belonging, however for Skrzynecki his lack of ethnic noesis is a barrier to his ability to feel he belongs. The use of the rhetorical interrogative highlights the uncertainty and alienation that he feels about his cultural identity.
